Specialist Upholstery Care

Specialist Suede Sofa Cleaning in London

Suede is one of the most delicate upholstery materials to clean. The wrong product or too much moisture can cause permanent watermarking, colour change, or pile damage. We assess your sofa before any treatment — and we are honest about what is and is not achievable.

A Delicate Material

Why Suede Requires Specialist Attention

Suede is a napped leather — the inner split of an animal hide, buffed to create a soft, velvety surface. That surface is highly sensitive to water, oils, and abrasion. Unlike smooth leather, suede cannot simply be wiped clean. Moisture causes the fibres to stiffen and mat; water dries to a visible tide mark; and the wrong solvent can strip the dye or alter the texture permanently.

Natural suede vs synthetic suede

Natural suede is animal hide — it responds to moisture and solvents very differently from synthetic suede (often microfibre or polyester with a suede-like finish). The two materials require entirely different cleaning approaches. We identify which you have before selecting any product.

Water is the primary risk

Even small amounts of water can cause suede to stiffen, shrink, or leave a permanent tide mark. Any cleaning method must be dry or near-dry — there is no safe wet extraction method for natural suede.

Dye instability

Suede dyes — particularly on darker colours — can bleed or fade when exposed to solvents. We carry out a dye stability test on a hidden area before treating any visible surface.

Pile direction matters

Suede has a directional nap. Cleaning against the nap can cause shading — patches that reflect light differently from the surrounding area. All treatment is applied in the direction of the pile.

What We See

Common Suede Sofa Problems

Watermarks and tide marks

The most common suede problem. Water dries to a visible ring that is often darker than the surrounding material. Some watermarks can be reduced with specialist dry treatment; others are permanent.

Oil and grease marks

Body oils, hair products, and food grease absorb into the suede nap and darken the surface. Specialist dry-cleaning solvents can lift oil-based soiling in many cases, though results depend on how long the mark has been present.

Flattened or matted pile

Heavy use and pressure flatten the suede nap, leaving dull patches. Suede brushing and gentle grooming during and after treatment can restore an even finish in many cases.

General soiling and dust

Suede traps fine dust and particles in its nap. Over time this dulls the colour and texture. Careful dry extraction and brushing removes surface soiling without wetting the material.

Stains from food and drink

Liquid stains on suede are among the most difficult to treat. The longer a stain has been present, the lower the likelihood of full removal. We assess each stain individually and give you an honest view before starting.

Assessment First, Always

Assessment and Cleaning Process

Because suede varies so significantly in material, age, and condition, every sofa is assessed individually before we select a method. We will not begin treatment until we have told you what we expect to achieve.

01

Photo assessment via WhatsApp

Send us a photo of your sofa on WhatsApp. We look at the material, visible soiling, and any staining, and give you an honest initial view of what is likely achievable before confirming a visit.

02

Material identification

On arrival we confirm whether the sofa is natural suede, synthetic suede, or a suede-effect microfibre. The care label, texture, and response to a dry test all inform this assessment.

03

Dye stability test

Before applying any product to a visible area, we test a hidden section for dye stability. If there is any risk of colour change, we adjust the method or advise you not to proceed.

04

Dry pre-treatment

Stains and soiled areas are pre-treated using specialist dry-cleaning solvents applied sparingly with a soft cloth or suede eraser, working in the direction of the pile.

05

Dry extraction and brushing

We remove loosened soiling using low-moisture or dry extraction, then groom the nap directionally to restore an even finish. No water-based extraction is used on natural suede.

06

Final inspection

We inspect the result carefully before leaving and discuss the outcome with you — including any areas where the result was limited by the nature of the staining or material.

Honest Expectations

Treatments, Limitations, and Honest Expectations

Suede is one of the few upholstery materials where we are most likely to advise caution before proceeding. Some conditions cannot be improved by cleaning — and attempting treatment on unsuitable material can make things worse.

Where we can help

  • General soiling, dust, and embedded grime in the nap
  • Oil and grease marks, where the stain is relatively recent
  • Flattened or matted pile — grooming can restore an even finish in many cases
  • Light surface staining where the dye is stable
  • Synthetic suede and suede-effect microfibre — generally more treatable than natural suede

Where results may be limited

  • Old or set watermarks — these are often permanent on natural suede
  • Stains that have been treated previously with household products — these can set the stain or alter the dye
  • Dye bleed or colour change already present before cleaning
  • Structural damage to the nap from heavy abrasion or heat
  • Very old or fragile suede where any treatment carries a risk of further damage

The Professional Difference

Why Choose Professional Suede Upholstery Cleaning

Dry method — no watermarking risk

We use dry and near-dry methods specifically suited to suede. There is no risk of the watermarking that household wet-cleaning attempts almost always cause.

Material-matched products

The solvents and tools we use are selected for suede specifically — not general upholstery products that may be too alkaline, too wet, or too abrasive for the nap.

Honest assessment before treatment

We tell you what we expect to achieve before we start. If we believe treatment is unlikely to improve the condition — or risks making it worse — we will tell you.

Suede Sofa Cleaning — Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove watermarks from a suede sofa?

Some watermarks can be reduced with specialist dry treatment — particularly if they are relatively recent. Old or set watermarks on natural suede are often permanent. We assess each case individually and give you an honest view before starting.

What is the difference between natural suede and synthetic suede?

Natural suede is the inner split of an animal hide — it is highly sensitive to moisture and requires a dry cleaning method. Synthetic suede is typically a microfibre or polyester fabric with a suede-like finish — it is generally more resilient and may tolerate a controlled amount of moisture. We identify which material you have before selecting any product.

Can I clean my suede sofa at home?

Dry brushing with a suede brush can remove surface dust and restore the nap. For stains, we strongly advise against using water, household stain removers, or steam — all of which can cause permanent damage. If in doubt, send us a photo on WhatsApp before attempting any treatment.

Will cleaning change the colour of my suede sofa?

When the correct dry method is used and the dye is stable, cleaning should not alter the colour. We carry out a dye stability test on a hidden area before treating any visible surface. If there is any risk of colour change, we will tell you before proceeding.

How long does suede cleaning take to dry?

Because we use dry or near-dry methods, there is minimal drying time — typically 30–60 minutes depending on the room temperature and ventilation.

Do you cover all areas of London?

Yes. We work across London including Kensington, Chelsea, Mayfair, Marylebone, Islington, Hampstead, Fulham, Battersea, Clapham, Canary Wharf, and surrounding areas. Contact us to confirm availability in your postcode.
